2015-01-20 10.07.30Welcome back Amigos! Screenshot_2015-01-20-09-32-34 Today, Nephrologists (Kidney Doctors), report that more than ever, there is a high demand for Pediatric Nephrologists (Kidney Doctor for Kids & Teens).  This is due to kids being diagnosed with PAINFUL Kidney & Urinary Stones, which are often caused by a lack of water and junk food! Today, kids & teens have so many drink choices, why should they drink boring old water?

  • Every system in our body depends on water & helps youngsters thrive!
  • Water helps the brain function & will help detox their kidneys, liver & other vital organs.
  • Water carries nutrients to their cells & helps them digest food.
  • Water provides a moist environment for their ears, nose & throat systems.
  • Water is our primary chemical component & makes up 60% of weight.

Screenshot_2015-01-20-09-30-31The chart above may seem like a lot of water, but it really isn’t.  Remember, 60% of your body is made of water, so it is critical that children’s water is replenished on a daily basis.

Can a child be drinking too much water?  It is possible for someone to drink too much water (hyponatremia), but it is very rare, and mostly happens to people who are extreme athletes.

The above chart is only a guideline, it is important you adjust your kid’s water consumption if you live in a very hot/humid climate, if they are athletes or have a medical condition. This Organic fruit & herb infused water recipe is a great way to always have great tasting water!20150119_161959

What is Detoxing? Why is it important? Detox Smoothie Recipe!

Screenshots_2014-10-20-19-09-24

Do you think it is important to change the oil in your car’s engine?

Detoxing our body on a regular basis is as critical as changing the oil in our car regularly!  Strive to be a finely tuned machine that is cleaned, lubed and given great fuel!

What is Detox?

According to Cambridge Advanced Learners Dictionary & Thesaurus, Detox is a process or period of time in which one stops taking unhealthy or harmful foods, drinks, and other substances into the body for a period of time, in order to improve health. Basically, detoxification means cleansing the blood by removing impurities from the blood in the liver. The body also eliminates toxins through the kidneys, colon, gall bladder, intestines, lungs, lymphatic system and skin.

Why is Detoxification important?

A typical car needs to have the oil changed about every 3000 miles. The accumulation of miles on an engine results in more unburned fuel to be dumped into the crankcase, which causes the oil to degrade. Over time, this can bring about rapid and undue engine wear and all the problems that come with it, such as loss of performance and fuel economy, and increased emissions and oil consumption.

Blood Detox is very important because our body is constantly being bombarded with toxins from every aspect of our lives.  Un-natural chemicals in your drinks, in your food, in your vitamins, medication, the air you breathe, in the lotions, pesticides, and beauty products, all result in a blow by blow degradation that cause undue wear and tear and major over-load on your organs.  Mucked up and dirty blood causes a loss of body performance and poor food fuel efficiency.

Changing your oil is one of the easiest and cheapest ways to make sure that your engine and car stays in good shape. This is such simple maintenance, but people often let it go for thousands and thousands more miles than is safe.

This is also true for clearing out the dirty blood and toxins in our body.  Cleansing our blood is one of the easiest and cheapest ways to make sure that our system stays in good efficient shape. By detoxing your blood, you can improve the functioning of all your main organs, especially your liver, your kidneys, your pancreas and gall bladder.

5 Signs Your Body Needs a Detox:

1) Unpleasant Noises:  Are you constantly full of gas, bloated, retaining fluid, have congested sinuses? Is your stomach constantly making weird knocking and pinging sounds? Do you get constant cravings? It’s time to examine the fuel you are putting in your body and consider a Detox!

2) Color: The color of your tongue should be a pretty pinkish color. If your tongue is White or yellow-coated, and/or you have bad breath, then consider a Detox!

3) Red Flags: Trouble with fertility? Have you had issues with your gallbladder or had it removed? Are you diagnosed with an auto-immune disease like Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue, Lupus,Celiac? Do you have Acne, Rosacea, Itchy skin, mood swings?

4) Sluggish Body:  Do you have early morning Insomnia? Are you always feeling fatigued, even after sleeping a long time? Is your body really sluggish about losing weight even though you exercise and diet regularly?  Do you get overheated and sweaty really easily?

5) Chemical sensitivity: Is your body sensitive when drinking alcohol? Are you easily affected during and after having alcohol, medicine, vitamins? Does the smell of fragrances and chemicals leave you feeling really sick and/or anxious?

According to Harvard-educated physician, Sara Gottfried, M.D., author of The Hormone Cure (Simon & Schuster, 2013), there are many signs that tell us that it is time to Detoxify our body.  She goes on to say that if you have 4 or more of these signs listed within the examples, you may have a Congested Liver that needs Detoxing.

There are so many types of Detoxing programs out there for you to choose from. It is imperative that you do your research and figure out what works for you! It is best to have a mentor help support you with your detox. Consider seeing a Functional Medicine MD, Homeopath, Holistic Nutritionist or someone who is considered a true expert in Detox and Nutrition.

It is important to clearly understand there is not a one size fits all! Some people use Juicing, Eating Cruciferous vegetables, Extracts, Teas or Herbs… Research!

It is important that you go very very slowly at first so that you can learn what is best for your genetics and sensitivities. For example, if you are sensitive to sulfur, sulfites, sulfates… then high levels of cruciferous vegetables are something to be very careful with. Cruciferous vegetables are high in sulfur and may lead to greater pain and inflammation. What are your genetic food sensitivities?

According to Mark Hyman, M.D., regardless of the Detox program you choose, do the following while Detoxing:

  1. – Drink at least 6 -8 glasses of filtered water daily
  2. – Are you having regular bowel movements? (Consider Magnesium?)
  3. – Allow more time for sleep while Detoxing. (Consider Magnesium)
  4. – Exercise Daily! (Min of 30 minutes)
  5. – Help an upset stomach with Ginger or Peppermint Tea. (4 cups a day)

As a Holistic Nutritionist, I can tell you that juice cleanses are an absolutely wonderful way to thoroughly cleanse your entire body. Juicing helps you skip chewing and breaking down food, so your digestive system is given a big break and time to repair and heal. Juicing your food will fill your body with live enzymes and an abundance of antioxidants that help not only neutralize free radicals but also strengthen and support your immune system, lower blood pressure, and improve your sleep and memory. An added bonus is these antioxidants have anti-aging properties!  Juice cleansing is an excellent way to inundate your system with antioxidants and enzymes.  We use the Nutribullet daily!

Again, start very slowly and please remember to consult a trained health care professional before you begin!

Here are a couple of Yummy Yummy recipe ideas to discuss with your Detox mentor:

Depression and Sleep Deprivation: Magnesium is Key

wpid-1426629108272.jpg

Do you have chronic Depression & Sleep Deprivation? Is this your nightstand?

I can’t tell you how many people consistently tell me that they have insomnia. Regardless of age, race and socioeconomic status, people are having a hard time sleeping, which often results in Depression!

cold and flu

Many of these people have another thing in common, they suffer from Depression & Sleep Deprivation often because of an undiagnosed Magnesium Deficiency.

Yes, your “Sleeping Aides” may be covering up an undiagnosed Magnesium Deficiency! Most traditional doctors don’t really test for Magnesium levels nor know how to test for Magnesium Deficiency.

Important Magnesium Facts:

1) Assessing magnesium status is difficult because most magnesium is inside cells or in bones. There is not one single way of diagnosing magnesium levels, so it is important to pay attention to other symptoms!

2) Many doctors forget to tell their patients that Magnesium and Calcium actually compete with one another and should be taken separately- not together!

3) It can be EXTREMELY dangerous for people over the age of 40 to be taking Calcium- especially if Heart Disease or Heart Attacks run in your family.

Foot Massage

There are many wonderful and relaxing songs, books and oils that can help us fall asleep, but some people need natural supplements to help stay asleep!

Possible Causes of Magnesium Deficiency:

1) Are you a Celiac or H-Pylori patient?

2) Do you have malabsorption issues?

3) Do you drink alcohol regularly?

4) Do you eat foods high in sugar or caffeine?

5) Do you have Chronic Constipation?

If you have insomnia and answered yes to any of these questions, consider Magnesium Deficiency.

Although Magnesium is absolutely critical for survival, the Standard American Diet typically does not provide adequate levels of Magnesium.

Incredibly, numerous studies show that if adequate levels of Magnesium exist, it is very difficult for disease to exist.

Yes, Magnesium helps every organ in your body, especially your brain and heart!

What are your family genetics?

Unless you have a severe genetic Calcium disorder or have taken radiation, then your Calcium risks need to be assessed before taking supplemental Calcium on a daily basis.

Again, many traditional doctors are unaware of potential Heart Risks associated with taking Calcium supplements.

By consuming foods high in Magnesium, combined with topical magnesium oil and oral magnesium, you may help restore your Emotional Balance & Sleep and any underlying Magnesium deficiency.

Due to depleted minerals in our soil, Magnesium rich foods alone are typically not sufficient in raising Magnesium levels, however, every bit of Magnesium in our food does actually help.

Some Magnesium rich foods include Cashews, Almonds and Broiled Spinach.

If you have a Magnesium Deficiency, then magnesium foods may not be enough and you may need to speak to your Holistic Health Practitioner about Magnesium supplementation, along with Vitamin D and B6.

The Linus Pauling Institute supports the latest RDA for magnesium intake (400-420 mg/day for men and 310-320 mg/day for women).

Some other symptoms of Magnesium Deficiency:

– Insomnia, Restless leg syndrome

– Headaches, Irritability, Seizures

– Diabetes, Poor Nail Growth, Low Blood Pressure

– Anxiety, Confusion, Abnormal Heart Rhythms

– Joint pain, Inflammation, Muscle aches

– Depression, Anxiety & Mood Swings

Are you aware of the stressors, unresolved feelings and thoughts that may be keeping you up? This is really important to address!

If you have tried everything and nothing is working, consider Magnesium supplementation while you are resolving your emotional stressors.

There is a reason sleeping pills and alcohol don’t work!

Again, the most Bioavailable and effective way of taking Magnesium that will survive stomach acid is Topical Magnesium Oil combined with oral Magnesium Acetate/Magnesium Gluconate capsules or Magnesium Citrate Capsules.

In the mean time, here is a Cashew Cheese Recipe that will add a little Magnesium to your diet!

It is important to take caution in giving ASD children/adults Cashews. Cashews are high in Copper which is great for some people but contraindicated for many people on the Autism Spectrum.
Please follow your doctor’s advice and/or the RDA for the proper Magnesium dosage for yourself.

Magnesium can possibly loosen stools so it is important that you take the right dosage that works for your own particular bowels.

Topical magnesium can itch and really tingle your skin the first week of using it, this is normal and will completely subside.

Vegan Lemon-Ginger-Nectar Tea and Jelly

Lemon-Ginger Tea

Lemon-Ginger Tea

Mmmm… there are few things that are as soothing as some healing tea.

If you are cold, tea will warm you;
If you are too heated, it will cool you;
If you are depressed, it will cheer you;
If you are exhausted, it will calm you…

William Gladstone

The sun is always shining here in California, but somehow I can feel the cold is coming… Autumn is here and winter is around the corner!

It must be the holiday flavors that make this soothing tea feel like winter in the summer heat! The cinnamon and cloves have a wintery way of inviting snuggles and sweet kisses…

My husband sips it as he does his reading, I sip as I snuggle up next to him, dreaming of my new blog… our toddler is coloring and enjoying tea from his sippy cup, the aroma even has our dogs feeling warm & cozy. The entire family is snuggling, relaxing and being creative… life is sweet 🙂

This Tea and Nectar jelly are a perfect Wintertime Remedy… even in this super heat!

Simmering Tea

Why these ingredients?

Lemons are detoxifying, alkalizing, full of Vitamin C- what a perfect ingredient! Lemon’s go one step further by fighting infection and cleansing your Liver and Bowels. Fresh lemon juice added to a large glass of warm water in the morning is a great Detoxifier.

Ginger is used to treat various types of “stomach problems,” including motion sickness, morning sickness, colic, upset stomach, gas.  Ginger is also used for pain relief, arthritis, sore muscles, menstrual pain, respiratory infections & cough.

Cloves are anti-fungal, antibacterial, antiseptic and analgesic. They’re packed with antioxidants and are good sources of minerals, omega-3s, fiber and vitamins.

Cinnamon is one of the oldest spices known.  Like Lemon & Ginger, it is known for its healing properties for cold/flu.  It helps fight fungal and bacterial infection and is also known to help fight diabetes, alzheimers, MS and can lower cholesterol.

Coconut Nectar has Coconut sugar, not table sugar. Table sugar has zero nutritional value, whereas Coconut Nectar is from the sap of the Coconut blossom and has several nutrients.
